First Aid Training in Schools
The First Aid Regulations in the UK, are covered by the Health and Safety (First Aid) 1981 Regulations. The regulations outline that Schools, like all employers, are responsible for providing adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if injured. Schools should consider the needs of non-employees such as pupils, students and visitors when undertaking their provision for first aid.
First Aid Training in Schools should be a priority for any School Business Manager or First Aid Lead. There would be an expectation for your School to have a mixture of staff trained in different first aid courses that ultimately meet different standards.
For All Schools: All Schools should consider having staff trained on the Emergency First Aid at Work course so that your School can have a designated first aider for fellow employees, contractors, and visitors. In a legal sense, any individual who holds the Emergency First Aid at Work certificate would have the necessary skills and certification to be a first aider in a low-risk environment, which is perfect for Schools. Whilst the average School site would be considered a low-risk environment. There would be an expectation to have a first aider that would be on-hand for any low-risk and high-risk first aid situations. This is why all Schools consider having a member of staff trained in the 3-day First Aid at Work course. In Primary Schools, Schools should also have several staff trained in Paediatric First Aid, the Paediatric First Aid course is designed for Schools and the content is set out by the EYFS and meets the expectations set out by Ofsted.
Pupil First Aid: It is now statutory guidance, that schools must regard basic first aid in the syllabus throughout School. Children should learn basic first aid for primary school children, for instance, dealing with common injuries or calling the emergency services. In Secondary Schools, pupils should be taught more first aid such as how to administer CPR and the purpose of defibrillators.
